Tips for a Healthy Menstrual Cycle

Did you know your monthly menstrual cycle is a cleanse?

Our liver and colon cleanse once a day and our bladder cleanses itself frequently all day long. Every organ maintains its health by cleansing. During menstruation blood flushes into the uterus to flush out the uterine lining and it leaves through the vaginal canal along with the unfertilized follicle that was produced in one of the ovaries.

Sometimes, our uterus doesn't cleanse properly, and it causes cramping, brown blood and pain in general. There are specific things you can do to help you have a healthier (less painful) period. Keep reading to learn how warmth, rest, letting it flow getting proper nourishment and staying hydrated will help you!

Warmth

Keep your abdomen/womb warm by wearing clothing that covers your belly when you're on your period. You can put a warm water bottle or rice pack/heating pad between your legs or on your womb. Drink warm beverages and eat warm foods to maintain good circulation and to avoid a draft.

*Avoid ice water and cold beverages to prevent blood stagnation. Make sure your pants/shorts aren't too tight around your waist too.

Rest

During your period your body produces more blood to flush out the uterus and that is a lot of work. When we rest we allow our uterus and our body to recharge. We quiet our mind so we can connect with our intuition more clearly.

When we don't rest, we can experience painful periods, PMS symptoms, heavier bleeding, exhaustion, compromised immune system and increased illness for the rest of the cycle that whole month. *Rest is the key component to having a balanced menstrual cycle.

Many women find it incredibly relaxing to receive womb reiki when they are on their period to care for themself and honor their body during this time.

Let it Flow

When we use tampons (organic ones too) or sea sponges it makes it harder for the womb to cleanse out. This is because we are essentially plugging ourselves up. Often this causes a buildup within the uterus which leads to old residue as well as increased blood flow (heavier periods) and increased cramping (uterine contractions). The contractions are happening to try to get the old residue out because it views the old residue and tampon as foreign.

Additionally, conventional tampons are often made of synthetic materials like rayon, which is derived from wood pulp and combined with cotton. Conventional tampons are often treated with harsh chemicals, fragrance, and dyes. They also contain pesticides sprayed on cotton crops. Tampons can irritate your vaginal canal and even cause micro abrasions which could cause an infection.

Nourishment

We need more food on our period because our body is producing more blood. The production of blood is dependent on sufficient nourishment. Eat three meals a day and snacks in between. Five meals total. Do NOT do a dietary cleanse while on your period!

  • Hot foods (temperature)

  • Nourishing and easy to digest

  • Cooked veggies

  • Soups

  • Bone Broth, Chicken Broth, (If vegetarian or vegan Veggie Broth)

  • Porridge // Oatmeal

Hydration

We need more fluids because blood is made mostly of water. Remember, our body makes more blood when we are on our period. Tea is ideal for hydration during our period because it gives fluids AND medicinal properties. Drink tea and water your whole period.

Most of us were never taught this information so hopefully by implementing some or all of these things will help you have a healthier, less heavy cycle and dread your period less and set up the next generation with the tools they need to be empowered about their monthly menstrual cycle!
