Yoni Steam Herbs: how to select and use them

Establishing your Yoni Steam practice - whether with a practitioner or DIY at home - is an exciting journey! There are so many benefits potentially in store, and devoting time to caring for yourself and your vagina is a wonderful act of self love.

You may already know that herbs can be added to the steam pot used for a Yoni Steam, but deciding which ones to put in and how to get them can be intimidating. It doesn’t have to be! Here I have some information on what goes into curating the right herbs for you, and of course links to specialized herb blends you can purchase online easily.

The first step to selecting your herb blend is to pay attention to your cycle.

While all Sacred Steam Yoni Steam herbs have been created to help anyone with a vagina achieve a healthy menstrual cycle, the more specific formulas are meant to address those with menstrual cycles that last a certain length. (If you are no longer having a monthly bleed/period it is still beneficial to steam.)

Now does this mean you HAVE to know the average length of your cycle to select a great herb blend? Definitely not! In fact, there is even an herb blend called Universal that is suitable for all cycle lengths and has beautiful ingredients like hibiscus petals, motherwort, nettle leaf, orange peel, and raspberry leaf.

All Sacred Steam herb blends are mixed as a formula and are designed to help to clear the uterus, improve vaginal flora, increase circulation, and help regulate the menstrual cycle. But it is certainly an added benefit to have an herb blend that best suits your type of cycle or treats the symptoms you are experiencing.

For shorter cycles

If you have a cycle 27 days or less, I would recommend a blend with citrus peel and astragalus, like Sacred Steam Gentle. The Gentle Herb Blend helps to mildly clear the uterus while also having the added benefit of being able to lengthen menstrual cycles and stop fresh spotting or interim bleeding. We don’t want our uterus to be fatigued. Lets nourish and support it!

For longer cycles

For cycles 28 days or more, I recommend a stronger herbal formula that includes rose petals, orange peel, and motherwort - like Sacred Steam’s Cleanse blend. It includes a strong dose of herbs to help clear out the uterus (physically and energetically) and improve blood circulation to the mid-section. These herbs promote circulation, balance the vaginal flora, improve scent, tighten skin, clear out excess mucus and nourish the reproductive organs.

Preventing Infections

For example, if you want to prevent infections, you will want to select an herb blend with white sage, lemon peel, and motherwort. I would recommend Sacred Steam’s Disinfect Herb blend, which is designed for women that have excess cervical mucus and infections or viruses that accompany it. It includes herbs that help to kill bacteria, yeast and viruses while expelling toxins, reducing inflammation, getting rid of excess mucus, deodorizing, and resetting the healthy vaginal flora in the reproductive tract.

Cooling Down

If you’re experiencing night sweats, hot flashes, vaginal dryness, or live in hot climates, or have excess heat in your body you’ll want herbs that help to nourish, moisturize, and cool down, as well as tonify the kidneys and provide circulation. Look for a blend with peppermint and orange peel the Sacred Steam’s Cool Yoni Steam Herbs.

This blend is designed for:

  • Hot flashes

  • Night sweats

  • Vaginal dryness

  • Users living in hot climates

  • Hysterectomies

  • Hemorrhoids

  • Infections or viruses accompanied by vaginal dryness or burning

Using Yoni Steam Herbs

If you are Yoni Steaming at home, you’ll start by placing a stainless steel or cast-iron pot on top of the burner and filling it with 6-8 cups of water. After bringing to a boil, turn the burner to low and add 2 tablespoons of your loose-leaf herbs to the pot of water or place in a tea bag/ball first. Put a lid on the pot and allow the herbs steep on low for about 20 minutes. Then allow the herbal water to sit for 5 minutes to cool slightly and add cool water or take lid off to let steam escape.
